Story

DataVie was born out of a practical need to find a smarter way to do our work smarter and eliminate the time-consuming manual work regarding data protection management.

The roots of startup DataVie go back to 2018, when the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect. The law was there to be followed, but the regulation didn't give the answer "how?". Piia, a founding member of DataVie and a lawyer, was assigned the role of a data protection officer in one of the biggest Estonia's telecommunications company. Piia's main task was to bring business into compliance with the requirements. Soon it became clear that the biggest challenge is to build sustainable data protection culture, where data protection would be integrated into company's processes so that it would be an "invisible" part of everyday life.

Complying with data protection requirements led to a large administrative burden in the form of manually managed hundreds of excels, which is why there was a need for an appropriate tool. The proper tool could have released human resource and avoid hiring additional labor. Since there was no suitable tool on the market, the idea was born to create an universal software that would offer companies a complete solution to meet data protection requirements more effectively.

In the fall of 2022, Piia introduced her idea to her former colleague Kaisi, with whom DataVie was founded in April 2023. The core of the team came together when Erki, a developer with long-term experience, joined the team.
